GLOBAL RELATIONS | UN Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Third Committee Approves Resolution Regarding Human Rights in North Korea
On November 18, the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Third Committee of the UN General Assembly approved a resolution sponsored by the Europe Union and Japan, with a 110-19 vote and 55 abstentions. The key clauses of the resolution acknowledge the UN Commission of Inquiry’s findings that the North Korean leadership has committed crimes against humanity and that these abuses should be considered by the Security Council for possible referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The resolution will come up for vote in a plenary session at the UN General Assembly in December 2014.
