REGIONAL RELATIONS | ROK Nuclear Envoy Hwang Visits Washington and Beijing
ROK special representative for Korean peninsula peace and security affairs Hwang Joon-kook visited Washington on May 5 to discuss the Six-Party Talks and denuclearization efforts with U.S. special representative for North Korea policy Sung Kim. Ambassador Hwang also met with Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Daniel Glaser of the U.S. Department of Treasury to discuss sanctions on North Korea. Ambassador Hwang then travelled to Beijing on May 6 to discuss the Six-Party Talks with PRC special representative for Korean peninsula affairs Wu Dawei.
ECONOMICS AND TRADE | Korea and Vietnam Sign Free Trade Agreement
Yoon Sang-jick, ROK minister of trade, industry and energy, and Vu Huy Hoang, Vietnamese minister of industry and trade, signed a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) on May 4 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The FTA precludes sensitive agricultural products. The FTA still needs to be ratified by both countries but is expected to go into effect later in 2015.
