Middle East Notes and Comment: Get Real

It’s an odd twist that anti-American Islamist movements should benefit so much from U.S. efforts to promote democracy in the Arab world. Even stranger is the idea that their greater involvement in politics is not such a bad thing. As counterintuitive as it sounds, these political movements have the potential to play a stabilizing and moderating role within restless political systems. The challenge for the United States and its friends in the Middle East is to make that involvement constructive and not a prelude to chaos.
