Pakistan: Showdown at the Red Mosque
July 5, 2007
The Pakistan government's showdown at the Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, should provide a much needed boost to the government's authority and discredit the radical leaders of the mosque. This is good news for Pakistan and for Musharraf, though it will not end the political crisis he faces. For the United States, it is time to recalibrate its policy to focus on Pakistan, not just on Musharraf, and to encourage Musharraf to speed up the transition to political rule.
