Reigniting the U.S.-India Economic Relationship: A New Framework

U.S. - India Insight: November 2012

The overall bilateral strategic partnership made important progress under the first Obama administration. During the second, the administration can further demonstrate its vision and commitment to building the partnership by pursuing a “New Framework for Economic Cooperation” that will set two of the twenty-first century’s foremost economic giants on a course toward a truly “defining partnership.”  Patience and realism are in order when engaging in economic discussions with India. It takes time, often many years, to change policies in both countries. Nevertheless, as Admiral (ret.) Walter Doran, former Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet reminded us at a recent CSIS event, "The U.S.-India relationship is going to be a generational issue ... but it is worth a generation of work."
