Smiles for Thanksgiving
November 19, 2018
It's Monday, November 19th.
The Evening will return to regular publication on Monday, November 26, but in the meantime, I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving and Independence Day are my two favorite holidays. And on this Thanksgiving I wish all of you and yours a wonderful holiday filled with family, friends and FOOTBALL!
Yes, football. Football makes me smile and I hope it makes you smile too. Take the great Odell Beckham, Jr., who makes a lot of people smile whether you are a New York Giants fan or not (I’m not.)
Odell is such a transcendent football player that even New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees once found himself at odds with his sons over Beckham. You see, the Brees kids decided to root for the Giants over the Saints a couple of years ago because after all, Odell went to the same school as the Brees boys, Isidore Newman School in Uptown New Orleans. I don’t think they would have cheered against their dad if it was just any player.
I love Odell because he brings joy to the game. And also because his mother Heather Van Norman used to be the track coach at my alma mater Tulane University. I’m not even upset Odell went to LSU over Tulane—well, I might be a little upset...
Odell even has a Washington connection—after Hurricane Katrina he attended St. Albans for a year.
I love Odell because he’s not just a football player, he’s a rock star. Nike thinks so too. And they made this fantastic new commercial with Odell that makes me smile.
