Each year, India showcases its stock of military hardware in a massive, vibrantly colored parade that winds through the heart of Delhi. This year, the significance of the patriotic holiday, known as Republic Day, was heightened by the presence of Russian president Vladimir Putin, leader of the country that provided much of the matériel on display. President Putin's visit on January 25-26, 2007, highlighted the long history that the two nations have together, and the agreements signed by President Putin and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh mark a renewed courtship - one that could become more significant if Russia's international dealings with the United States sour.
