An Uncertain Future for Japan's New Prime Minister

The Japanese Diet elected Shinzo Abe as the new prime minister on September 26. At first glance, the prospects for Abe’s cabinet appear fairly good. He maintains a solid support base within his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), but appearances can be deceptive. The truth is that the LDP suffers from deep internal cleavages that could emerge under Abe’s leadership. The future of Abe’s cabinet is highly uncertain.
