Violence in the North Caucasus
August 31, 2009
Violence in Russia’s North Caucasus is on the rise. Since January 2004, CSIS staff have been compiling, almost daily, a database that tracks incidents of violence occurring in the region.
Summer 2009 has been exceptionally violent, with July the bloodiest month in years. On the eve of the 5th anniversary of the tragedy in Beslan, we present this report on violence in the North Caucasus, with a focus on summer 2009.
The Human Rights and Security Initiative thanks past and present staff members for their work on this collective endeavor, especially Project Consultant Matthew Malarkey for his dedication to the project. We plan to release quarterly reports through 2010.
Note: This is an amended version of the Summer 2009 report. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the changes.
