Answering your questions about the essay competition

October 24, 2009

The CSIS Commission on Smart Global Health Policy essay contest has been running for two weeks and we are already receiving some great submissions. We have received a compelling case for more HIV prevention messages in African mass media, why investments in community based surveillance systems could assist the fight against infectious and non-communicable diseases, and stories of public health students’ research in the field. Are you studying cholera in India, organizing health projects in your own community or raising money for health programs at your church, synagogue or mosque? We want to hear from you!

Several of you have asked questions about the contest and we have tried to answer several of them below. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Check back with us soon or email us the question.

What is the deadline for the essay contest?
November 20, 11:59pm EST

Can the essay be submitted by a team or only by individuals?
You are welcome to form teams to write essays. However, should your essay be selected for inclusion in the final report, you will not be eligible for the cash prize.

Can anybody enter the contest?
Yes! Everyone is welcome to submit an essay. from those of you who haven't finished high school or to those who haven’t studied for an exam in forty years, we’re interested in everybody’s opinions.

Is the contest only open to U.S. citizens?
No. The contest is open to everybody, of any nationality. U.S. global health programs affect people all over the world. Whether you’re living in Cape Coast, Ghana or Normal, Illinois, we want to hear your ideas.

Should the essay be on a specific theme? What referencing style should I use?
Global health is an interdisciplinary field, thus you are welcome to focus on any aspect that interests you. This does not need to be a piece of academic writing. That said, if you prefer to cite official sources, please use the Chicago style.

If my essay is selected, may I remain anonymous?
Of course. Please let us know at the bottom of the essay.

How many essays may I submit?
Due to the large volume of submissions, we ask you to limit yourself to one entry per person.
