Photos: Booth Day in Ghaziabad

May 2, 2014

Nellie Bristol, Senior Fellow, Global Health Policy Center
Center for Strategic and International Studies

Polio vaccinators came to this slum in Ghaziabad, India on the first day of a week-long polio vaccination campaign. India was certified as polio free by the World Health Organization on March 27 this year, but the country remains vulnerable to virus importations. The government along with polio partners—WHO, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Rotary International, USAID, and the Gates Foundation—will remain vigilant as long as the polio virus continues to circulate in other countries.

The first day of the campaign is known as “booth day”  since
vaccinators set up stations where children can come to get polio drops.

Involvement of religious leaders helped convince skeptical
communities to accept vaccination.

Children receive visors, buttons, plastic balls, and whistles.

Vaccinators also visited this slum near a construction site.

Hand drawn maps help community health workers
keep track of which children have been vaccinated.

Vaccinators go house-to-house to ensure no children are missed.

After they are vaccinated, children’s fingers are marked.

Even newborns receive polio drops.

Vaccinators mark houses to tell those coming after
them the status of the children inside.

Along with slums, vaccinators focus on transportation hubs
such as train and bus stations.
