2010 PONI Capstone Conference - Omaha, NE
The Capstone Conference on October 27th concluded the 2010 conference series. The event featured a selection of some of the best presentations from the three preceding regional conferences in Washington, Albuquerque and Aldermaston (UK). The capstone conference was unique in its level of participation from senior experts in the field, including those at U.S. Strategic Command, which is housed at Offutt.
Each year the PONI capstone conference brings together a large group of experts from the nuclear laboratories, policy community, academia, and military and defense establishments. It therefore represents a tremendous opportunity to not only stimulate new thinking and move the debate forward on a wide range of nuclear issues, but to also to junior and senior experts from all sectors. The Capstone Conference featured panel presentations addressing the following topics:
- Nuclear Strategy for the Changing Security Environment
- Nuclear Proliferation Drivers and Constraints
- Responding to the Threat of Nuclear Terrorism
- Technical Challenges for Stockpile Sustainment and Nuclear Security
It also featured keynote remarks by General Kevin P. Chilton, Commander, U.S. Strategic Command; Bernard Sitt, Director, Center for International Security and Arms Control Studies on the New Developments with the French Project on Nuclear Issues; John Hamre, President and CEO, Center for Strategic and International Studies and James Acton, Associate, Nuclear Policy Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Michael Gerson, Research Analyst, Center for Naval Analyses on Next Steps in Bilateral Arms Control: Preliminary Findings of the PONI Next Generation Working Group.
