2017 Global Development Forum: Breakout Sessions (B)

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
CSIS Headquarters

Breakout Sessions (A) | Breakout Sessions (B) | Breakout Sessions (C) | Main Page

Breakout Session 1: The Pacific Alliance: The Link Between Free Trade and Development (10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)
In Latin America, a growth and development model based on increased competition and integration with the world has been gaining adherents in recent years as populist governments have been in retreat in the region. The case of the Pacific Alliance is the best example of how regional integration, free trade and regulatory confluence are on the rise. All of this as the United States seems to be turning back to a protectionist “America First” stance. How can Latin America and the Pacific Alliance react to this new reality? Several very experienced Latin American thinkers on the issues of trade and development will share their views on these timely questions. (Speaker bios)

Breakout Session 2: Technology and Innovation as Drivers of Development (12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.)
Technology is an important topic at a crucial juncture for Global Development. Technology can empower people in developing countries directly, giving them access to information and both life-enhancing and life-saving services. Technology can fuel a new generation of innovation. Technology also brings new tools that reshape the delivery of global development interventions themselves, with the potential to increase the reach, effectiveness, and scale while reducing costs. In addition, the macro-economic shifts being driven by technological advances are reshaping the development landscape itself, both opening new opportunities and challenges. (Speaker bios)
