2018 KITA-CSIS Reconnecting Asia Conference

Looking North: Korea in a Reconnecting Asia
Tuesday, September 18, 2018 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons Seoul
The CSIS Simon Chair’s Reconnecting Asia Project and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) hosted “Looking North: Korea in a Reconnecting Asia,” a half-day conference that explored Korea’s ambitious plans for connectivity. The New Northern Policy and New Southern Policy, including proposals for rail connections through North Korea, could dramatically reduce Korea’s shipping times to western markets, creating valuable economic opportunities and peacefully deepening regional integration. Rail lines from East Asia to Europe have proliferated in recent years and volumes are expected to nearly double in the next decade. Just as the European Coal and Steel Community helped turn historical enemies into economic partners, these developments could have positive and far-reaching consequences for the region’s future.

This joint CSIS-KITA event was held on September 18 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons Seoul, located at 97 Saemunan-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, 03183.
