Addressing Social Unrest in Colombia: A Conversation with Colombia's Minister of the Interior, Daniel Palacios Martínez

May 12, 2021 • 9:00 – 10:00 am EDT

Please join the CSIS Americas Program for a conversation with Colombian Interior Minister Daniel Palacios Martinez about Colombia's recent public demonstrations and protests.

The demonstrations began on April 28 in response to a tax reform measure proposed by the Government to mitigate the country's economic crisis. On May 3, President Duque withdrew the bill. The protests have continued and have become a broad call for improvements to Colombia's health and education systems and law enforcement tactics, among other reforms.

The discussion will address the reasons for the proposed tax reform, the role of misinformation, disinformation, and social media, and the importance of improved training for police and military units. Dan Runde, Senior Vice President and head of the CSIS Americas Program, will moderate the conversation.

This event is made possible thanks to general support to CSIS.
