Richard Dowden first visited Africa as a volunteer teacher in Uganda during the first years of Idi Amin's rule. Since then, Richard has travelled to and written about almost every African country. As a journalist, first at the Times and then as Africa Editor at both The Independent and The Economist, Richard has spent decades covering the continent. In November 2002 he was appointed Director of the Royal African Society.
