American Business in China: The View from Shanghai

September 27, 2017 • 4:00 – 5:15 pm EDT

Join the Freeman Chair in China Studies on September 27th for a lively and frank discussion about the state of American business in China featuring a top-notch line-up of American business executives operating on the front lines in China. American trade and investment ties with China have grown dramatically over the past three decades, often to the benefit of the United States. Moreover, American companies have had a positive effect on China’s economy and been a voice for economic reform and liberalization. That said, there is a growing concern that American industry, workers, and consumers are no longer benefitting from these ties, and that as a result, the United States must take more dramatic measures to rebalance the relationship. AmCham Shanghai President Kenneth Jarrett will present the results of the most recent business climate survey of the chamber’s members. This will then be followed by a roundtable panel that will discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the American business community in China and the relative effectiveness of alternative policy approaches the United States could take to promote a truly mutually beneficial relationship.
