Artificial Intelligence and Global Development: Accelerating Inequality or Self-Reliance?

March 14, 2025 • 10:00 – 11:00 am EDT

Please join the CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development for a discussion on how to enable more of the world to harness the benefits of large-scale AI applications for global development while proactively mitigating risks.

Advances in Artificial Intelligence are progressing at remarkable speed. AI integration could add $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030 and has a wide range of applications to bolster resilience and address development challenges from many angles, such as healthcare, education, financial inclusion, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, and disaster risk management. Many AI breakthroughs have come from U.S.-based innovation, putting the United States at the forefront of decisions connected to AI development, governance, and cooperation.

As only a handful of countries dominate AI development and regulation, current AI principles often reflect the priorities of advanced economies. Meanwhile, Global South nations struggle to provide the amount of energy, computing, and engineering support required to develop their own AI, contributing to the underrepresentation of their imprints on AI models and training materials. Additionally, the focus of AI language models on widely spoken languages limits the development of localized solutions.

This event is made possible through the generous support of Meta.
