Asian Defense Spending Report Roll-Out

Monday, October 15, 2012 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Center for Strategic and International Studies B1 A/B 1800 K Street, NW Washington DC, 20006

Remarks and presentation by

David J. Berteau
Senior Vice President and Director, International Security Program

Guy Ben-Ari
Senior Fellow and Deputy Director, Defense Industrial Initiatives Group

Joachim Hofbauer
Fellow and Lead Report Author, Defense Industrial Initiatives Group

This report analyzes the defense spending of the five countries with the largest defense budgets in Asia: China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Unlike trends in many other regions, defense spending in these five countries has been on the rise for over a decade. For each country, the report examines overall defense spending from 2000-2011, as well as spending on procurement, personnel, operations and maintenance and research and development. It also presents several key findings and areas for further research.
