Assessing the Need for an OSCE Heads of State Summit in 2010
The roundtable event was hosted by the New European Democracies Project, and the Institute for New Democracies (IND), and it will take place on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the 4th floor conference room of CSIS. The event will feature Jon Chicky, National Defense University, Ariel Cohen, the Heritage Foundation and Janusz Bugajski, CSIS.
At the Ministerial Meeting in Athens in December 2009, Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev of Kazakhstan reiterated the proposal of President Nursultan Nazarbayev that the OSCE hold a summit of heads of state and government during 2010. The recent events in Kyrgyzstan are an example of several security challenges that necessitate closer consultation among OSCE capitals in addressing the newly emerging threats. A heads-of-state summit in 2010 would provide the ideal venue and opportunity for fashioning greater security coordination among participating national leaders.
