The Banyan Tree Leadership Forum: American Competitiveness in Southeast Asia
President Obama has set a goal to double U.S. exports in five years. Asia is clearly the new engine of growth for American expansion in global markets. Fred Hochberg is a leading member of the President’s economic team and has developed focused strategies for enhancing US competitiveness globally, and particularly in Asia. Mr Hochberg recently traveled to ASEAN countries and has included the region in his plans for EXIM Bank support for US exporters. ASEAN is America’s 4th largest overseas market and is comprised of 10 countries, 620 million people and a $1.5 trillion gross domestic product.
Mr. Hochberg is the 23rd president of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the U.S. government's official export-credit agency. Hochberg also serves as chairman of the board. Mr. Hochberg has more than 30 years of experience in business, government and philanthropy. From 2004 to 2008, he was dean of Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York, N.Y. From 1998 through 2001, he served as deputy, then acting administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA), where he quadrupled lending to minority- and women-owned small businesses.
The Ex-Im Bank plays a key role in the implementation of the President's National Export Initiative to double U.S. exports in five years and create two million new jobs. During Hochberg's tenure, the Bank has focused on opening new markets for U.S. goods and services in emerging economies with infrastructure needs, including Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria and South Africa. Hochberg has also worked to increase the global footprint of key domestic industries in which U.S. exporters have a comparative advantage, such as renewable energy, industrial machinery, medical technology and agriculture.
