Book Event: A Discussion with Ronnie Kasrils

Former South African Minister for Intelligence Services
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Center for Strategic and International StudiesFourth Floor Conference  Room1800 K Street, NWWashington DC, 20006
Please join the CSIS Africa Program for a conversation with South African author and activist Ronnie Kasrils about his new book, The Unlikely Secret Agent, and a discussion of the challenges facing contemporary South Africa.

Mr. Kasrils was a leading figure in the anti-apartheid struggle, a 20-year member of the ANC National Executive Committee, and a founding member of the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. With the end of apartheid, Mr. Kasrils served in the South African government as Deputy Minister of Defense, Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, and Minister of Intelligence Services. The Unlikely Secret Agent tells the story of Kasrils' late wife Eleanor, who joined him in the anti-apartheid underground, was arrested and detained by South Africa’s feared Security Branch, and eventually escaped detention into exile. The book was the 2011 winner of South Africa’s prestigious Alan Paton Award.
