Building International Support for Taiwan - Report Launch
Brought to you by
Countering Beijing’s growing threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait will require a strong international coalition of partners to support Taiwan and send credible warning signals to China. To deepen international cooperation on capacity building and deterrence, Washington will need a compelling narrative for why Taiwan matters that instills urgency across a wide range of capitals and avoids limiting engagement through overly militaristic framings of the challenge. From May to November 2023, CSIS convened a geographically diverse task force of experts to develop a finer-grained understanding of how Taiwan and cross-Strait issues fit within other countries’ national interests and what types of strategic narratives on Taiwan resonate in various capitals.
Please join us for the rollout of a summary report from the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies distilling takeaways and exploring implications for Washington, Taiwan, and partner capitals.
The discussion will feature authors Jude Blanchette, Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS, Ryan Hass, Director, John L. Thornton China Center; Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies; and Senior Fellow - Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution, and Lily McElwee, Deputy Director and Fellow at the Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS. They will be joined by task force members Manoj Kewalramani, Fellow in China Studies and Chairperson of the Indo-Pacific Studies Programme at the Takshashila Institution, and Janka Oertel, Director of the Asia programme and Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
This event is made possible by generous support from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO).
