Careers in Global Development: Mike Hess

Tuesday, September 26, 2017 9:00 am - 10:00 am
CSIS Headquarters

“Careers in Global Development” is a monthly series featuring U.S. senior-level, multilateral and NGO officials who have worked in the field of development for at least twenty years. The series is aimed at young professionals who are interested in working in development and will include a one-hour dialogue on both the specific expertise of the speaker, as well as the career path and influences along the way. It will focus on specific areas of interest, including the role of humanitarian assistance in development and U.S. foreign policy; development as a tool to counter violent extremism; and sectoral issues such as food security, health, and education.

This session features Michael Hess, whose has held positions in the U.S. military, private and public sectors, and the U.S. Government. Mr. Hess has been a principal at M&TCH Consulting after working at L-3 MPRI. Before joining MPRI, he served as Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Democracy Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance, USAID. Prior to his appointment to USAID, he worked as a Senior Risk Reviewer and Vice President at Citibank. Hess has over 30 years of active and reserve service in the United States Military. In April 2003, Colonel (Ret.) Hess was recalled to active duty to serve as the humanitarian coordinator in the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Hess has a bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a master's degree from Columbia University in New York, a master's from New York University in New York, and is a graduate of the National Strategic Studies Program at the United States Army War College.

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Hess with questions surrounding his work or career advice.
