Children at the Border: What's Causing this Crisis?
Last week, President Obama formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from the U.S. Congress to deal with the recent influx of Central American children illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. An important stop-gap measure, particularly as the federal government will run out of money to deal with the crisis should Congress fail to approve the emergency funds, the request does little to address the root causes driving these immigrant flows - including violence, instability, and a lack of opportunity in immigrants' countries of origin. Join us as Doug Farah, Americas Program senior associate, President of IBI Consultants, and expert on Central America, explains the drivers of illegal immigrant flows and what the U.S. government can do to ease the crisis.
