The CommonHealth Live! on Medical Supply Chain Innovation

June 16, 2025 • 1:00 – 1:30 pm EDT

In this episode of The CommonHealth, Maj. Gen. Paul Friedrichs, CSIS Global Health Policy Center Senior Adviser, and David Senior, Cencora Senior Vice President for Market Economics, Intelligence & Influence, will discuss how the United States can move toward more resilient supply chains for generic pharmaceuticals.

The United States is highly dependent on generic medicine suppliers in India and China and has been prone to an increasing number of shortages over the past twenty years. U.S. policymakers and industry leaders are increasingly concerned about the potential national security implications of unforeseen supply chain interruptions and have piloted innovative solutions to avoid disruption. But generic pharmaceuticals operate under a different set of market constraints than branded products and face unique considerations as the United States seeks to return a greater share of drug manufacturing capability on shore. How can the U.S. government support an orderly five-year transition to on- and near-shore supply chains, to achieve a more predictable, reliable supply of generic medicines? What new or expanded public-private partnerships could secure the availability of safe, effective products for Americans?

This discussion will be followed from 2:00-4:20pm by a public Summit on Resilient U.S. Medical Supply Chains, hosted by the CSIS Bipartisan Alliance for Global Health Security and in partnership with Cencora, which can be viewed here.

This event is made possible by the generous support of Cencora.
