The CSIS Indonesia Initiative featuring Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri

The CSIS Chair for Southeast Asia Studies held the first public event under the CSIS Indonesia Initiative Friday, September 28, 2012, featuring Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri. The event took place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the CSIS B1C Conference Facility. Senior Adviser and Chair for Southeast Asia Studies Ernest Bower moderated and provided opening remarks.

Dr. Basri has been the Chairman of Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board since June 2012. He is also the Vice Chairman of the National Economic Committee of the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Dr. Basri is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics, University Indonesia, and Research Associate at the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics University of Indonesia. He is also a member of the Asia Pacific Advisory Group of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Dr. Basri is the co-founder of CReco Research Institute. He was Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia in 2006-2010 and former G20 Sherpa to the President of the Republic of Indonesia for meeting in Washington, November 2008 and acted as a Deputy of Minister of Finance for G-20 from 2006-2009. His expertise is International Trade, Macroeconomics and Political Economy. He has acted as a consultant for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the USAID, AUSAID, OECD and UNCTAD. Dr. Basri has been a member of advisory team to the Indonesian National Team on Trade Negotiation.

The CSIS Indonesia Initiative at CSIS seeks to enhance understanding of Indonesia and create a forum for cultivating discussion of important policy questions relating to Indonesia's foreign policy, security and political posture, trade and investment, and social issues.
