Cultivating Competitiveness: Addressing the Challenges of Transportation and Logistics
Brought to you by
While the agricultural sectors in all three countries have greatly benefited from deep market integration, North American agricultural producers face several transportation and logistics challenges that impact efficiency, costs, and supply chain reliability. Aging highways, congested border crossings, and insufficient rail capacity slow down the movement of agricultural goods. Furthermore, both trucking and rail transport, crucial for grain shipments from Canada and the United States to Mexico, face severe labor shortages and rising fuel costs. Extreme weather, such as hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico or wildfires in Canada, further complicate the production and transportation of agricultural goods since they can halt rail and road transport, delaying shipments. This panel seeks to discuss the major challenges in transportation and logistics and identify areas of cooperation between the United States, Canada, and Mexico to alleviate some of these inefficiencies related to the movement of agricultural goods.
