European Union Enlargement: Background, Developments, Facts

Thursday, September 13, 2007 4:00 am - 4:00 am

On September 13, 2007 Ambassador Michael Schwarzinger and Ambassador Martin Sadjik presented their new book “European Union Enlargement,” which analyzes in detail the accession process of the Eastern, Southeastern, and Mediterranean countries into the European Union. As diplomats who were directly involved in the process, Sajdik and Schwarzinger relate their first-hand experience with the complex accession negotiations that took place between 1998 and 2002. The breakfast discussion also focused on the recent EU enlargements of 2004 and 2007, as well as on the accession prospects for the West Balkan states and Turkey.
