The Executioner's Men: A Discussion on Los Zetas with George Grayson

Tuesday, July 10, 2012 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Center for Strategic and International StudiesB1-C Conference Center1800 K Street, NWWashington DC, 20006

With:

George W. Grayson
Class of 1938 Professor of Government Emeritus
College of William & Mary, and
CSIS Americas Program Senior Associate

With an additional speaker to be confirmed.

Security was one of the most pressing issues for Mexican citizens during the recent presidential campaign. While the government continues efforts to dismantle transnational crime organizations responsible for spikes in violent crime rates, the Zetas have emerged as one of the country's most powerful and violent criminal organizations.  Beginning as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel, the Zetas quickly splintered off, finding it more profitable to traffic illegal narcotics themselves.  What is the structure of the Zetas and where do they operate?  What strategies might the Mexican and U.S. governments as partners in anti-crime efforts use to take downthe organization?  What role do the Zetas play in trafficking narcotics through Central America? For an in-depth look, we are pleased to host George W. Grayson, (co-author with Samuel Logan) of the recently published The Executioner's Men: Los Zetas, Rogue Soldiers, Criminal Entrepreneurs, and the Shadow State They Created (Transaction Publishers, 2012).  Join us for what is sure to be timely and informative discussion.

Open to the public, however space is limited.  To RSVP, please send confirmation to program coordinator Michael Graybeal at mgraybeal@csis.org no later than COB Monday, June 9.
