Fireside Chat with Ukrainian Human Rights Lawyer and Head of Nobel Prize-winning Center for Civil Liberties Oleksandra Matviichuk
Brought to you by
Oleksandra Matviichuk is the head of the Nobel Peace Prize winning organization Center for Civil Liberties in Kyiv, Ukraine. She is also the winner of the Democracy Defender Award for ‘Exclusive Contribution to Promoting Democracy and Human Rights’ from missions to the OSCE. While the work of Ms. Matviichuk and the Center for Civil Liberties have focused on deepening democracy and promoting human rights in Ukraine and the OSCE region, the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine brought a new focus of her work. Through the Euromaidan SOS initiative, Ms. Matviichuk has been documenting war crimes and atrocities committed for a future prosecution of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his associates. This discussion will center on the current and future states of affairs in Ukraine, the importance and difficulty of documenting human rights abuses in an active war, and prospects for accountability.
