The Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis Continued?: Assessing China’s April 2023 Military Exercises Against Taiwan
Brought to you by
Please join the CSIS China Power Project on Thursday, April 20 from 8:30 am – 9:30 am EDT for a virtual discussion on China’s recent military exercises near Taiwan and how they compare to the exercises launched after then-Speaker Pelosi’s visit in August 2022. Announced after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen returned from her U.S. transit, these drills are seen as a response to Tsai’s meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California. Joining us to unpack these PLA military activities are: Mr. John Culver, Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub and former CIA senior intelligence officer; Dr. Ken Jimbo, Professor at Keio University and Managing Director at the International House of Japan/API President; Admiral Hsi-Min Lee, Former Chief of the General Staff, R.O.C. Armed Forces and Senior Research Fellow at the Project 2049 Institute; and Mr. Sugio Takahashi, Head of the Defense Division at National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) at the Japan Ministry of Defense in Tokyo. Dr. Bonny Lin, Director of the China Power Project and Senior Fellow for Asian Security at CSIS, will moderate the discussion.
This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
