CSIS-KAS Series: Germany at the End of the Merkel Era

Please join CSIS and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for a conversation on Germany’s security and defense policy ahead of Germany’s elections this September. Germany’s central role in both NATO and the EU make it an important player in shoring up both transatlantic and European defense. What are the hallmarks and legacy of Chancellor Merkel’s security and defense policy, and how might Germany’s security and defense agenda change following the September elections? Specifically, what implications will the new German leadership have for the transatlantic relationship, particularly as allies withdraw from Afghanistan and the U.S. focuses increasingly on its domestic agenda and strategic competition with China? Prof. Dr. Joachim Krause, Director of the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University, and Kori Schake, Senior Fellow and Director of Security and Defense Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, will join Rachel Ellehuus, CSIS Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program, for an in-depth discussion on this topic. Paul Linnarz, Director of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s USA Office, will offer introductory remarks.

This event is made possible through cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.
