The transatlantic partnership faces a critical year of transition ahead. As the United States prepares to elect a new president in November, the Europea Union looks to implement the Treaty of Lisbon to include new positions such as an EU President and Foreign Minister.
At the same time, both sides face a host of continuing and emerging challenges in Afghanistan, the Balkans, the Middle East, and relations with Russia, as well as global challenges associated with terrorism, global warming, and proliferation.
To examine these critical issues, SPIRI and CSIS are launching a new roundtable discussion series on Emerging Global Challenges and Transatlantic Relations. The first session of this initiative featured an address by Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and commentary by former U.S. National Security Advisor and CSIS Counselor and Board Member Zbigniew Brzezinski. The event was moderated by Bates Gill, Director, SIPRI, and Stephen Flanagan, Director, International Security Program, and Senior Vice President, CSIS.
