The Gender-Based Violence Crisis in Haiti

Join the CSIS Americas Program for a discussion on the urgent crisis of gender-based violence facing Haiti.

Gender-based violence (GBV) in Haiti is a widespread and escalating problem, exacerbated by the country's deep-rooted gender inequalities, systemic impunity, and social and economic instability. As the political and security crisis in Haiti has deepened in recent years, the use of GBV, particularly sexual violence, has increased as a systematic tool of intimidation and punishment, and ultimately of control. Local civil society organizations are continuing their efforts to support survivors of GBV, but require additional external assistance. With the formation of a new interim government and the arrival of the Kenyan-led, UN-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission earlier in 2024, it becomes imperative to understand GBV’s deeply entrenched roots and recent expansion and escalation in order to begin to effectively address this crisis.

This event will discuss the history, trends, and present challenges posed by GBV in Haiti, building on the findings of a forthcoming policy brief by the CSIS Americas Program on this issue. It will also delve into how policymakers should approach security support in Haiti through a gender lens to ensure respect for human rights, accountability, and support for survivors of GBV.

This event is made possible through cooperation with the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. State Department.
