Gender Equality and Sustainability in Panama: A Conversation with Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes

Please join the Center for Strategic and International Studies for a Smart Women, Smart Power conversation with Her Excellency Erika Mouynes, Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. She will discuss Panama’s approach to gender equality, its role as a sustainable leader in the region, and Panama’s response to Covid-19, one year into the pandemic. This program is being held in conjunction with the Americas Program.

Minister Mouynes spent more than 10 years working in law, business and government in both New York and Panama. In New York, she worked on structuring infrastructure projects with multilateral agencies and in investment negotiations in European and Latin American financial markets. In 2019, she was appointed as Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs and Cooperation of the Foreign Ministry. She has been honored with numerous international awards, including the Association of Corporate Counsel's Best Global General Counsel Award in 2015, and is a member of various global outreach boards such as Kangu (Maternal Health in Africa).

Prior to becoming minister, Mouynes was the Chief Legal Officer of the investment fund, Fintech from 2013 to 2017. She also previously served as a senior lawyer in project finance at Shearman & Sterling, LLP. In Panama, she practiced law at several firms in the corporate and litigation areas. In 2004, she was appointed Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries.

Mouynes has a bachelor’s degree in Law and Political Science from the University Santa Maria la Antigua in Panama, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Latin American University of Science and Technology. She has a master’s degree in Corporate Law from New York University and a master's degree in international law from the University of California, Berkeley. She also obtained a postgraduate degree in Business and Finance from the New York University as a Fulbright Fellow.
