Global Aging Forum: Saving, Investment, and Demographic Change: The Global Dimension

Wednesday, July 25, 2007 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
CSIS 1800 K Street, N.W. Washington, D.C.

Speaker:
Barry P. Bosworth
, Senior Fellow and the Robert V. Roosa Chair, The Brookings Institution

Chaired by:
Richard Jackson
, Director, CSIS Global Aging Initiative and Neil Howe, Senior Associate, CSIS

Dr. Barry Bosworth, Senior Fellow and the Robert V. Roosa Chair at the Brookings Institution, discussed his recent work on the relationship between demography and the economy, and in particular savings, investment, and capital flows. Along the way, he shed light on some of the most important but least well understood impacts of global aging. How will population aging affect economic performance? What are the chances of an "asset meltdown" when Boomers retire? Do the United States and other aging developed countries face a future of capital shortages? Can capital inflows from a younger and faster growing East Asia prop up our aging welfare states?
