Global Leaders Forum with Bill Shorten, Australian Opposition Leader

Friday, September 16, 2016 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
CSIS Headquarters

The CSIS Pacific Partners Initiative is pleased to invite you to a Global Leaders Forum with Bill Shorten, leader of the opposition in the Parliament of Australia. He will discuss the concept of inclusive growth in Australia’s foreign and economic policy, focusing on the shared opportunities and challenges for established and emerging democracies in the Indo-Pacific.

Bill Shorten joined the union movement in 1994 when he began work at the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) as an organizer. He became the AWU's Victorian secretary and then national secretary, before being elected to the Australian Parliament in 2007.

In Parliament, Shorten was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, overseeing the development of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. He also served as Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Minister for Superannuation and Financial Services, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Education. Since 2013, Shorten has been leader of the opposition.
