Global Security Forum 2012: Europe Economic Crisis and the Rise of Populism, Nationalism, and Extremism

Working Lunch Session
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm
Four Seasons Hotel 2800 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W.Washington, DC 20007

The Global Security Forum 2012 is a forum on the top challenges facing U.S. and global security. With deep social spending cuts, high youth unemployment, limited economic growth, and uncertainty over the future direction of Europe, there has been a resurgence of political support across Europe for populist, nationalist, and extremist parties. This panel will explore this development, its impact on European youth, and whether there is a political correlation between recession and increased radicalization in Europe. The panel will also address the potential implications of these developments for the transatlantic relationship.
