Impacts of the Gulf Oil Spill Series

Managing Environmental Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Thursday, March 3, 2011 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Center for Strategic and International Studies B1 Conference Level 1800 K Street, NW Washington DC, 20006

Managing Environmental Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Keynote:
David M. Kennedy, Assistant Administrator for National Ocean Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Commenters:
Elgie Holstein, Senior Director for Strategic Planning, Environmental Defense Fund

Juliet Eilperin, Staff Writer, The Washington Post

Moderator:
David Pumphrey, Deputy Director and Senior Fellow, Energy and National Security Program, CSIS

Some of the world’s most abundant resources are found in environmentally sensitive areas.  Companies have had to develop special skills, practices and technologies to operate in these regions without undue burden on the environment or local communities.  The April 2010 oil spill had immediate and lasting impacts on the Gulf, many of which are poorly understood.

This session examined how NOAA managed the spill clean-up efforts and explored the impacts of the Gulf oil spill, along with ways of improving environmental protection and remediation in environmentally important areas.
