Implementation of the KORUS FTA: A One-Year Anniversary Commemoration

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 9:00 am - 10:30 am

In commemoration of the one year anniversary of the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement implementation, CSIS Korea Chair, Korea Economic Institute of America and the CSIS Simon Chair hosted a celebration event and senior panel discussion.

Dr. John Hamre (CSIS President, CEO, & Pritzker Chair) and former Congressmen Donald Manzullo (KEIA President and CEO) opened the event with remarks and their reflections on KORUS and the the free trade agenda.

Mr. Gheewhan Kim, Minister for Economic Affairs from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Washington, D.C., gave a Keynote Address with an introduction by Dr. Victor Cha, CSIS Senior Advisor and Korea Chair.

Our panelists discussed the significance of this agreement, their personal experiences in concluding the FTA, and views on the future of U.S.-Korea economic relations. Karan Bhatia shared his experiences with the negotiation of KORUS as the Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. Mr. Bhatia is currently the Vice President and Senior Counsel of Global Government Affairs at General Electric Company. Kathy Stephens, the former US Ambassador to the ROK, especially highlighted the importance of the agreement for the two allies. Scott Miller, CSIS Senior Advisor and Scholl Chair in International Business, gave an informative business context for the agreement going forward. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Abraham Kim, Vice President at the Korea Economic Institute.
