Inclusive Innovation: Building Opportunities for all Americans

October 26, 2021 • 12:00 – 1:30 pm EDT

Please join the CSIS Renewing American Innovation Project for a timely conversation on the need for greater diversity in innovation and invention. There are millions of inventors and innovators across the U.S., but more must be done to give opportunities to the would-be inventors who would help bolster our national competitiveness and innovative edge further if given the chance.

With studies showing that only 22 percent of all U.S. patents list a woman as an inventor and that women only make up 13 percent of all inventors, it is imperative that we close this gap to ensure all Americans can innovate. Further, minorities make up ever greater numbers of Americans today, yet remain underrepresented among the ranks of patent-holders and entrepreneurs as well. To keep leading in technological innovation, we must harness the potential of all Americans. In particular, the federal government is exploring what policies this country can implement to support underrepresented groups in applying for patents, and help policymakers address these inequalities. The government and the private sector play key roles in supplying opportunities and to encourage women and minorities to secure intellectual property rights.
