On September 16, the World Bank management decided to discontinue the Doing Business report. The World Bank performs many functions, from financing development projects to providing research and advisory services. Providing data-driven analysis that helped countries improve their standing in specific metrics is essential to the World Bank’s functioning, making the Doing Business report one of the most critical products in global development policy. They were not perfect - there were reports of data irregularities and political interference. While those concerns should be addressed, ending the program altogether is a serious error. The Bank’s shareholders ought to revisit this decision and consider alternatives to ending this critical product.
