A New Transatlantic Policy Approach Towards the Western Balkans

August 4, 2021 • 11:30 am – 12:15 pm EDT

CSIS-KAS Series: Germany at the End of the Merkel Era

Please join CSIS and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for a conversation on U.S. and German policy towards the Western Balkans. As the Biden administration pledges to work closely with its European allies, new policy approaches, development tools, and dialogue mechanisms to revitalize transatlantic policy across the region are essential as these countries grapple with weak institutions, endemic corruption, democratic backsliding, and are increasingly influenced by strategic competition. German MdB Peter Beyer, Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation in the German Federal Foreign Office and Western Balkans Rapporteur for the German Parliament, and James O’Brien, Vice Chair at the Albright Stonebridge Group, will join Heather A. Conley, CSIS Senior Vice President for Europe, Eurasia, and the Arctic, for an in-depth regional conversation that explores German policy toward the region and how the U.S. and Germany and the EU can achieve better policy outcomes in the Western Balkans. Paul Linnarz, Director of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s USA office, will offer introductory remarks.

This event is made possible through cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.
