Online Event: CSIS Book Launch with Heidi J. Larson – Stuck

September 16, 2020 • 9:00 – 10:00 am EDT

How Vaccine Rumors Start – and Why They Don’t Go Away (Oxford University Press, 2020)

Please join the CSIS Global Health Policy Center to celebrate the launch of Heidi J. Larson’s new book, Stuck: How Vaccine Rumors Start – and Why They Don’t Go Away. Heidi J. Larson serves as Professor of Anthropology, Risk, and Decision Science and Director of the Vaccine Confidence Project™ at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and is Co-Chair of the CSIS-LSHTM High-Level Panel on Vaccine Confidence and Social Media Misinformation Campaigns. This event is hosted by the High-Level Panel and the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security. The conversation was pre-recorded on Friday, September 11th, 2020.

Even before the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, vaccine reluctance and refusal had been growing on the margins of society, through interconnected religious, political, and social networks. As misinformation has spread globally, particularly through social media, it has become clear that vaccine rumors gain traction across diverse communities and contexts. Stuck examines the forces behind vaccine trust and confidence, offering a critical perspective as we anticipate the introduction of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The session opened with a fireside chat between J. Stephen Morrison, Senior Vice President and Director of the CSIS Global Health Policy Center, and Heidi J. Larson, followed by a panel discussion with Katherine Bliss, Senior Fellow with the CSIS Global Health Policy Center, and Bruce Gellin, President of Global Immunization at the Sabin Vaccine Institute.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
