Online Event: Transatlantic Approaches to Combatting Foreign Interference
Please join CSIS for a conversation with the Honorable Mike Rogers, Former Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Javier Zarzalejos, Vice President of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation, and member of the European Parliament (Spain), for a conversation on the transatlantic challenges of countering and deterring foreign interference into democratic institutions and processes.
In June 2020, the European Parliament established a special commission to address evidence of “foreign interference in the democratic institutions and processes of the EU and its Member States.” The FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and other U.S. agencies have also created task forces to identify foreign influence activities, which culminated in the October 2020 announcement that the FBI and Director of National Intelligence had detected efforts by Iran and Russia to penetrate U.S. voter data during the U.S. presidential election in November. And, as recent Russian cyberattacks against U.S. agencies and firms demonstrate, countering malign influence activities and shoring up democratic resilience will be an urgent priority both for the incoming Biden administration and the European Union. Moderated by Heather A. Conley, Senior Vice President for Europe, Eurasia, and the Arctic, and Mira Milosevich, Senior Analyst for Russia and Eurasia at the Royal Elcano Institute in Spain and recent CSIS Argyros Visiting Fellow, Congressman Rogers and MEP Zarzalejos will discuss the challenges to strengthening democratic institutions against interference, influence, and disinformation tactics.
This event is made possible by the generous support of the Argyros Family Foundation.
