Over the last fifty years, the Peace Corps has played an important and evolving role in U.S. foreign policy and development objectives. Peace Corps volunteers undertake the vital work of grassroots development with projects ranging from information technology to small business development, education to health and HIV/AIDS awareness. Through their service, volunteers not only help achieve development goals, but also promote peace and understanding between the United States and the communities in which they serve. As the Peace Corps enters its next half century of service, we will discuss the agency’s achievements, lessons learned, and its role as part of U.S. international engagement.
