The Philippines and the Millennium Challenge Corporation: Lessons in Development
The CSIS Southeast Asia Program is pleased to host a conversation on the conclusion of the first five-year development compact between the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Philippine government, featuring Ms. Dana Hyde, chief executive officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation; Ambassador Jose Cuisia, Philippine ambassador to the United States; Ambassador Mark Green, president of the International Republican Institute; and Ms. Marivic Añonuevo, managing director of the Millennium Challenge Account-Philippines.
MCC will conclude its first five-year development compact in the Philippines on May 25, 2016. The panel will discuss the first compact’s successes and challenges, lessons learned, and how the Philippines’ experience with MCC can be useful to the development community in the future.
Hyde is the chief executive officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation. She was previously the associate director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Prior to joining the OMB, Hyde led the establishment of the State Department’s Office of the Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources, and went on to serve as senior adviser to Deputy Secretary Jack Lew.
Cuisia has served as Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States since 2011. He has dedicated his term to promoting trade and investment in the Philippines, strengthening the military and security alliance with the United States, and providing assistance to Philippine nationals while further cementing the robust relationship between the two countries.
Green is the president of the International Republican Institute (IRI). Prior to leading IRI, Ambassador Green served as president and chief executive officer of the Initiative for Global Development, a nonprofit organization that engages corporate leaders to reduce poverty through business growth and investment in Africa. He has served previously as senior director of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, U.S. ambassador to Tanzania, and Representative for Wisconsin’s 8th District.
Añonuevo is the managing director of Millennium Challenge Account-Philippines, the central point of contact for the implementation of the MCC’s Philippines Compact. She previously spent 28 years in the private sector at Ayala Land Inc., where she was senior vice president and head of the Ayala Malls group.
