Join the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Monday, June 5, 2023, for a virtual Smart Women, Smart Power conversation with Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Vice Chief of Naval Operations of the U.S. Navy. Admiral Franchetti will sit down with Kelsey Hartigan, CSIS senior fellow, and deputy director of the Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI), for a discussion on the U.S. Navy’s priorities as it upholds the international rules-based order and protects U.S. interests across the maritime domain, including in the Indo-Pacific and Europe. Additionally, the pair will discuss Admiral Franchetti’s approach to mentorship, recruitment, and retention within the force.

Admiral Franchetti assumed the duties as Vice Chief of Naval Operations on September 2, 2022. Throughout her time in the service, she has led across the globe – including in Korea, Europe, and Africa. At sea, she has served on numerous vessels including carriers, destroyers, destroyer tenders, replenishment ships, and a hospital ship. Notably, she commanded USS Ross (DDG-55); led Destroyer Squadron 21 (DESRON 21) ; and commanded the USS George Washington (CVN-73) Carrier Strike Group.

Ashore, Franchetti’s highlights as a flag officer include commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea; commander, Carrier Strike Group 15; chief of staff, Strategy, Plans and Policy (J-5) Joint Staff; commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO; deputy commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa; and director for Strategy, Plans and Policy (J-5), Joint Staff.
