Powering Up American Diplomacy in the 21st Century: A Conversation with the Honorable Richard R. Verma

CSIS and the American Academy of Diplomacy are pleased to invite you to join CSIS President and CEO, Dr. John J. Hamre, on Wednesday, April 3, at 4:00pm EDT for a conversation with the Honorable Richard R. Verma, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, on the low-cost, high-impact, and apolitical role that diplomacy and development play as pillars of national security. The session will cover the State Department’s budget, its resources, and its need for innovation in its staffing process. A reception will follow the live event.

Richard R. Verma serves as the Deputy Secretary of State for Management & Resources. In this role, he acts as the Chief Operating Officer of the Department, and leads the Department’s efforts on modernization, foreign assistance, and a wide range of workforce and strategic issues. Deputy Secretary Verma previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to India, former Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, and the former National Security Advisor to the Senate Majority Leader. Deputy Secretary Verma has also had a distinguished career in the private sector and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
